The Senate of Pennsylvania recently approved legislation that would repeal Pennsylvania’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). Senate Bill 1068, sponsored by Senator Gene Yaw, was approved by the Senate in a vote of 33-17.
RGGI is a multi-state compact in which participating states require fossil fuel power plants to purchase allowances for each ton of carbon dioxide released through its energy production. The proceeds from these allowances would be used by states to fund programs that reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions. Opponents of the program say that it is effectively a tax on energy producers which will lead to an overall increase in electricity costs for consumers.
Senate Bill 1068 is now before the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for consideration.
