Federal Government Shut Down – Here’s What Happens Next

Congress failed to reach an agreement on a short-term funding measure to keep the federal government running through November 21. As a result, the government shut down yesterday, October 1. Under the law, federal agencies must furlough non-exempt employees. Workers whose jobs protect life and property will continue to report, and they will receive retroactive pay once the shutdown ends.

Social Security payments will continue, seniors on Medicare can still see their doctors, and the U.S. Postal Service remains in operation.

The direct economic impact of a shutdown is often limited, but a prolonged closure could lead to uncertainty that strains the economy. The government plans to release its monthly jobs report on Friday, though it is unclear if that will happen during the shutdown.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has provided resources for the business community during a shutdown, as well as resources specifically for small businesses.
