Amtrak officials have warned that train service in Harrisburg could face disruptions if Pennsylvania lawmakers fail to resolve a transit funding dispute.
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) depends on state funding to support public transit in the Philadelphia region. Some of those funds also help maintain rail lines owned by Amtrak that serve riders across the state. With the General Assembly deadlocked over this year’s budget, SEPTA has cut back, threatening to leave Amtrak without critical funding to operate certain lines.
The potential service impacts include the Keystone Service, which offers frequent daily trips between Harrisburg and New York City, and the Pennsylvanian, which runs from Pittsburgh to New York. Both routes provide key connections for commuters, students and travelers throughout Pennsylvania.
Legislative leaders remain divided on how to address public transit funding and overall spending, leaving the future of Amtrak service in Harrisburg uncertain.
