WORMLEYSBURG, PA – Harrisburg Academy congratulates the two Upper School students being recognized as Semifinalists in the 2016 National Merit® Scholarship Program: Sarah Trindell ’16 and Wesley Sheker ’16.
The National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP) honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
Of the 1.5 million students who entered the 2016 competition by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), only 16,000 were named as Semifinalists. These academically talented high school seniors, including Sarah and Wesley, have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth $32 million that will be offered next spring.
“Sarah and Wesley are excellent students across all academic disciplines, and they are active and talented leaders in music, athletics, and community service organizations in their local and global communities,” said director of college counseling, Keo Oura Kounlavong-Sabath.
“As they seek post-graduate success, this honor will help them stand out in the college application process. The Academy is proud to serve as a top independent school with the well-rounded, highly prepared scholars that colleges desire in their classroom and campus communities,” she added.
National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 440 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.
