The Salvation Army Harrisburg (TSA HBG) will host their third annual “Be the Light” community Christmas event this Thursday, November 17, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at their headquarters at 506 S. 29th Street, Harrisburg, PA. Sponsored by Universal Media, Inc., “Be the Light” is a holiday giving celebration featuring decorated Christmas trees and the kickoff of TSA HBG’s annual Red Kettle Campaign.
“We are ecstatic to jumpstart the holiday season with our annual Be the Light celebration,” says Jenny Gallagher Blom, Director of Programs and Operations at TSA HBG. “This gathering is a wonderful opportunity for community members, families, and local businesses to come together to experience gorgeous holiday decor, enjoy food and fellowship, sing Christmas classics, and learn about the programs and services of the Salvation Army Harrisburg. Let’s admire the creativity of 35 beautifully decorated Christmas trees surrounding our beacon of light—a 4,000+ lighted flagpole Christmas tree. Each bulb represents a child who will receive toys and clothing assistance this Christmas from TSA Harrisburg.”
Businesses, groups, and families have sponsored Christmas trees for $1,000 each; in addition, individuals have donated $10 to light a lightbulb on TSA’s flagpole tree.
This FREE community event will feature:
• 35 Christmas trees displayed, each sponsored and decorated by a local business, family, or individual
• Harrisburg Academy Choir performance
• Community Christmas caroling
• Door prizes and Red Kettle awards for volunteers; Christmas tree awards
• Refreshments including pizza, cookies, and hot cocoa
• Free Book table
• A visit with Santa Claus
“The Salvation Army works tirelessly to support more than 4,000 children, 1,000 families, and hundreds of senior citizens in the Harrisburg region during the holiday season, but we can’t do it alone,” says Toni Lynn Mark, Resource Development Director at TSA HBG. “You’re invited to usher in the holiday season with us this Thursday, November 17. Come for an evening of holiday fun and help make this Christmas season special for so many who are struggling right now.”
The Be the Light event also kicks off the region’s Red Kettle season and features kettles at 11 different locations, including Capital City Mall, Karns Foods, and Walmart. “The iconic Red Kettles not only provide support to families in need over the Christmas season, they also directly benefit the almost 40,000 individuals served annually by The Salvation Army Harrisburg,” says Major John Griner, Corps Officer. “When you donate to the Red Kettles, your gift stays local and sustains our community with the largest food pantry in Dauphin County, mentoring for youth and adults, rental assistance, nutrition education, free Bibles, after-school programs, and employment support services. Only through your support and generosity are our services available.”
