HARRISBURG, Pa. (May 1, 2015) — PinnacleHealth System was recognized with an “A” grade in Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2015 Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections.

An “A” grade is more difficult to achieve for hospitals that typically care for sicker patients because complex cases can have a disproportionate number of less favorable outcomes in certain quality measures.

The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by The Leapfrog Group, an independent industry watchdog.  For its latest scores, the Leapfrog Group assigned letter grades—A, B, C, D, or F—to 2,523 hospitals based on their performance on 28 safety measures.

Out of 127 Pennsylvania hospitals that reported for the survey, 23 hospitals received an “A” grade, meaning that when it comes to patient safety, they were most effective at preventing errors and avoiding harm. Nationally, fewer hospitals received an “A” in Leapfrog’s latest safety report card; 782 hospitals received an “A” (compared with 790 in October).

The group used data from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, CDC, CMS, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) annual survey. For the first time, the Leapfrog Group included information on a hospital’s historical performance on its Hospital Safety Scores.

“Patients want and expect safe care and should seek hospitals that demonstrate consistency in low infection and readmission rates, use of evidence-based medicine and managing complications,” said Michael A. Young, president & CEO, PinnacleHealth System. “We’ve made patient safety a significant priority in achieving excellence and improving care.”

PinnacleHealth achieved top percentile ratings for:

  • Making surgery safer
  • Appropriate intensive care unit staffing
  • Low infection rates
  • Taking steps to avoid harm
  • Managing serious events

In addition to LeapFrog Group recognition, PinnacleHealth is nationally recognized by The Joint Commission as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® for 2013, received a four star quality rating from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), received Joint Commission specialty certification in five areas (Advanced Diabetes, Advanced Heart Failure, Spine, Knee and Hip Replacement Surgery and Primary Stroke/Stroke Rehab) and has multiple national recognitions for cardiac care (Chest Pain and Atrial Fibrillation Certifications).
