HARRISBURG, Pa. (August 18, 2015) – Today PinnacleHealth celebrates the one-year anniversary of the Ortenzio Cancer Center. The project was funded by a donation from The Ortenzio Foundation, for which it is named, as well as community and corporate donors. Since opening its doors, the center has treated more than 1,500 patients.
Located on its West Shore Campus in Hampden Township, the Ortenzio Cancer Center provides comprehensive oncology services in multiple specialty areas, including cancer risk assessment, women’s cancer treatment, radiation oncology, medical oncology, infusion services and cancer clinical trials.
“For cancer patients, treatment can be exhausting. They and their loved ones are traveling to appointments several times a week. Having high-quality, coordinated care close to home was critical to the patients we helped on their journey to recovery this past year,” states Michael A. Young, president and CEO for PinnacleHealth. “The Ortenzio Cancer Center at PinnacleHealth provides invaluable services for cancer patients in our community.”
The multidisciplinary team at the Ortenzio Cancer Center consists of an array of cancer specialists—including breast surgeons, medical oncologists, gynecologic oncology surgeons, radiation oncologists and nurse navigators. The center currently employs 54 people, including physicians.
The Ortenzio Cancer Center was built to facilitate PinnacleHealth’s vision for integrated, patient-centered care closer to home by putting a full continuum of high-quality cancer services on the same campus as the West Shore Hospital and the Fredricksen Outpatient Center.
“Centralized services within one facility offer convenience to patients and families, reducing stress and travel,” said Young. “The center also includes a tranquility garden in a serene and beautiful location for patients and visitors to relax, reflect, and rejuvenate. We are focused on providing a healing environment to patients and loved ones.”
“The center provides the most options for patients through state-of-the-art radiation therapy technology, including stereotactic radiotherapy surgery, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, several kinds of brachytherapy, intraoperative radiation therapy and image-guided radiation therapy,” said Joella Wilson-Dagar, MD, radiation oncologist at PinnacleHealth. “These technologies offer a wide range of advantages such as pinpoint accuracy to protect healthy tissue, minimal or no side effects, and shorter treatment times.”
The center also offers on-site laboratory for the expedited delivery of lab results and infusion areas that are designed for maximum patient comfort and privacy, as well as efficiency and aesthetics.
“As a physician, I appreciate the focus on the patient that is built into the center,” said Theresa Lee, MD, breast medical oncologist at PinnacleHealth. “For instance, we have dedicated physician suites that make it easy for us to collaborate on specialty care. Combined with state-of-the-art technology and centralized services that are available at the center, we’re empowered to provide the best treatment while supporting the emotional needs of our patients.”
The Ortenzio Cancer Center complements the existing PinnacleHealth Cancer Center located on the Community Campus. The East Shore center houses the region’s first CyberKnife TM, a robotic radiosurgery system designed for non-invasive treatment of cancerous and non-cancerous tumors, as well as radiation oncology, infusion therapy, medical oncology, breast care specialists, nurse navigation, patient and family education and cancer risk assessment.
