POSITION: Summer Camp STEAM Lead Teacher
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: This is an hourly, temporary position, reporting to the Director of Education at Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY: The Lead Teacher delivers educational programming for Summer Camps. Assists students in having a safe, fun and educational experience. Presents educational lessons, and demonstrations. Facilitates camp style games and activities.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Serve as the instructor and facilitator for Summer STEAM Camps including preparation for the days’ activities and clean-up of the room at the conclusion of the day.
2. Implementation of camp curriculum.
3. Assist the Full Time STEM Educators with planning the weekly lessons to meet the cognitive, emotional, social, and physical needs of the individual as well as the group as a whole, when asked.
4. Interact positively with the child(ren) to encourage involvement in activities, and to support the individual needs of the child(ren).
5. Facilitate Science Center exploration, snack time, lunch time, and camp games or activities.
6. Facilitate small group activities and instruction.
7. Maintain inventory of all summer camp materials. Alert Director of Education when supplies need to be ordered.
8. Proactively address logistical or behavioral issues. When necessary, involve the Director of Education for a resolution.
9. Work with minimal supervision, assess situations, and make necessary decisions on the job in order to maintain and improve the quality of the camper experience, and inform the Director of Education of actions taken.
10. Maintain familiarity with emergency procedures, and assist in implementing them if/when necessary.
11. Attend summer staff orientation, departmental and all-staff meetings as directed, staying informed of ongoing changes in department and overall organization.
12. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Education.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Prior teaching experience necessary, preferably at the elementary or middle school level.
2. Experience in leading activities for students in science, STEAM or a STEAM field required.
3. Work in a summer camp or co-teaching environment is recommended.
4. Excellent interpersonal and guest service skills are required. Must enjoy working with groups of children.
5. Must be poised, self-motivated, and a positive influence on team dynamics. Ability to make appropriate decisions quickly is essential.
6. Ability to work weekdays, full days for the 5-7 week period of summer camps.
7. Must be able to work independently to a high standard of reliability and quality.
8. Must be able to be a positive, professional representative of Whitaker Center to the community.
9. Must have good oral communications skills, including the ability to speak clearly and project your voice on a daily basis.
10. Must be able to teach a variety of age groups with enthusiasm, energy, and much creativity.
11. Must communicate professionally and positively with educators, staff, and children.
12. Ability to stand for long periods, climb stairs frequently, and lift up to 30 lbs.
13. Must be able to understand and obey safety rules and regulations related to equipment and chemicals.
14. Must have a willingness to utilize the newest educational technologies available in all educational programs.
15. Must be able to provide courteous and effective service to the general public, co-workers and volunteers. Positive and friendly attitude at all times.
16. Exhibit strong writing, analytical, presentation and organizational skills. Ability to write, edit, and proofread correspondence and presentation materials for accuracy and style.
17. Ability to work as part of a high performance team and be a strong team player.
18. Ability to successfully complete a Pennsylvania State Police Clearance, a Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance obtained through the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and a Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal History Record Information obtained by submitting a full set of fingerprints to the Pennsylvania State Police or its authorized agent for submission to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
EQUIPMENT SKILLS:
1. Technology literate; demonstrated understanding of Microsoft and Internet research procedures and database application.
2. Working knowledge of telephone, computer, printer, copier, and calculator.
