RN Charge Nurse – Staff Developer

This is a “working manager” position. The Dialysis RN Charge Nurse – Staff Developer provides professional nursing care and coordination of nursing care by working cooperatively with, patients, family members, and all patient care team members. These services are for patients of all ages-pediatric to geriatric in a dialysis center. This manager will assist with leading the team as assistant to the Dialysis RN Manager.

A.D.N. degree from accredited school of nursing required; B.S.N preferred; three-year diploma from accredited diploma program may be substituted for nursing degree.

Licenses and Certification:
Current RN license in the state of practice required.
Current CPR certification through American Heart Association.


  • One or more years of experience as a registered nurse.
  • Three months or more experience in providing nursing care to patients on maintenance dialysis.
  • Three months experience in hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD).
  • Current basic EKG interpretation certification preferred.
  • Prefer staff development experience.

Essential Functions:

  • Plans and provides patient care for the patients in the facility in accordance with physician orders and facility policy and procedures.
  • Provides quality direct patient care and renal replacement therapies independently, in a professional, considerate, and respectful manner.
  • Performs home dialysis patient care and training as needed.
  • Oversees dialysis technicians/LPNs in the performance of dialysis from start to finish, monitors patient reaction to treatment and performance of the dialysis machines and demonstrates an in-depth understanding of the mechanics of dialysis.
  • Leads a team of three to six dialysis care givers, at one or more facilities.
  • Interacts and communicates with facility partners in a collaborative, respectful manner and gives pre-and post-treatment reports through appropriate reporting process to primary registered nurse.
  • Documents patient’s physical assessment, vital signs, patient’s treatment reviews, and observations in patient medical records; brings issues to the attention of the physician and primary nurse.
  • Documents, evaluates, and implements dialysis orders. This includes collection of the pre-treatment dialysis data and reviews patient record prior to dialysis. As required, communicates estimated time of arrival with assigned patient’s nephrologist.
  • Analyzes patient assessments, dialysis orders, laboratory results, and discusses issues with the nephrologist. This includes obtaining patient vital signs, assessing patient’s vascular site, laboratory findings and general health.
  • Communicates emergencies, life-threatening complications to the patient, and related incidents to supervisor, facility staff, and the patient’s physician. This can include vascular access complications to patient’s nephrologist, Registered Nurse, and Nurse Manager so appropriate corrective actions can be taken prior to next scheduled treatment.
  • Provides initiation and discontinuation of the prescribed renal replacement therapy, including but not limited, to formulating a plan per physician orders, verifying safety measures are in place and complied with, administering medications or other appropriate treatments, and documenting all activity appropriately on the hemodialysis flow sheet or facility EMR.
  • Verifies that patients are taking all prescribed medications and performs medication reconciliation.
  • Maintains skills necessary to perform surveillance on dialysis access (catheter, fistula, graft) for early signs of failure or infection; this includes (if needed and after receiving the appropriate training) the ability to perform arteriovenous access monitoring using ultrasound machine.
  • Reviews patient’s electronic/paper internal and external records for orders as appropriate and administers dialysis related intra-venous and /or oral medications as prescribed and/or via protocol.
  • Conducts post dialysis assessment and patient discharge by evaluating treatment, documenting medication administration utilizing the appropriate protocols, assessing condition of vascular access, discharging the patient when vital signs are stable, and documenting and recording patient treatment data. Also, documents notifications and communicates changes in patient treatment plans and any other pertinent clinical information, and if needed, to appropriate Outpatient Facility Administrator when patient is to be discharged.
  • Provides patient education/teaching applicable to the patient’s medical condition and charts training and patient description or demonstration of training received.
  • Oversees proper functioning of the machine which includes the preparation of the delivery system, dialysate bath, and dialyzer and confirms that all mandatory tests on the dialyzer and equipment are performed, communications of repairs, and disassembly and disinfection of dialysis equipment. Notifies Bio-Med Technician of any equipment malfunctions.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of infection control and prevention of transmission of blood borne pathogens.
  • Assists the Administrator in quality measures, i.e., audits, infection control compliance, accreditation preparation, etc. Fosters Quality Improvement by participating in Quality Meetings.
