HRG’s Madzelan Honored for Educational Outreach Efforts

Michelle Madzelan is the 2017 recipient of the John H. McCormick Educational Outreach Award. This honor is given to individuals who demonstrate a commitment to educating students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) throughout Central Pennsylvania.

Madzelan is a transportation engineer at Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. and has been an active supporter of STEM education throughout her career. She began by speaking to students at her own high school as an alumni and later served as a civil engineering mentor in the Architecture, Construction and Engineering (ACE) Mentoring program. In addition, she has spoken to high school girls at the Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day event and was the engineering panelist to local high school students at the HACC York Campus Career Day.

Madzelan has served as an engineering judge for several student competitions, including the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Mid-Atlantic Regional Student Conference. She has also shared interview and resume tips with engineering students through mock interview sessions organized by the student chapter of ASCE at Penn State Harrisburg.

She is is an active board member of the Central PA section of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Central PA chapter of Women’s Transportation Seminar, an international organization promoting the advancement of women in the transportation profession.
