Highspire Borough to hold groundbreaking for two community bridges

What:   Highspire Borough in Dauphin County will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for two bridges slated for replacement after being damaged by Tropical Storm Lee in 2011.

Why:     Highspire’s Jury Street Bridge, one of only two access points to the borough’s Cowtown residential area, was closed in 2011 after flooding severely damaged the structure. Another neighborhood bridge on Market Street was also damaged, resulting in closure of its sidewalk and requiring a long-term fix. The borough worked with engineering firm RETTEW to secure a variety of funding, including PEMA, FEMA, and grants through Dauphin County, to fund the design and construction for the bridge replacements, totaling about $850,000 for both. Construction will begin this summer, with the groundbreaking as the ceremonial start to the projects.
