CAMP HILL, Pa. – Holy Spirit–A Geisinger Affiliate now offers specialized care for gastrointestinal cancers. Mohsen Shabahang, M.D., PhD, FACS, a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist, leads the gastrointestinal (GI) oncology team at Holy Spirit General Surgery.
Dr. Shabahang, the director of general surgery for Geisinger, brings extensive experience in surgical oncology procedures that treat upper gastrointestinal cancer, such as cancers of the stomach, biliary tract and esophagus. “Our goal is to build an upper GI oncology practice,” he says. “We feel that this really serves the community by bringing expertise from the Geisinger system, but keeping the patients and the care in the hands of local physicians who have been serving the community for many years.”
GI cancers are often found through endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), according to Dr. Shabahang. Holy Spirit began using this advanced, minimally invasive technology in July. Considered the gold standard for finding upper GI cancers, the ultrasound provides a better view and accurate staging of the disease. “With EUS you can make the right decisions in terms of treatment,” Dr. Shabahang says. “You can determine whether surgery is feasible and whether surgery or chemotherapy should be first.”
For some patients, endoscopic ultrasound is used to guide the specialist as a biopsy is done to obtain more information about a lump or lesion, which then helps to guide treatment. “Our goal with treatment will be to cure the disease or to relieve symptoms as best we can,” Dr. Shabahang says. Care will be coordinated with the patient’s primary care physician. Surgery, when needed, will be performed at Holy Spirit Hospital.
