Family Festival Harrisburg – Central Penn Parent’s FREE Family Fun Day
On: May 20, 2016 Filed Under: Member News
Midstate families are invited to attend the annual Central Penn Parent Family Festival on Saturday, June 4, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Harrisburg Area Community College campus.
The Family Festival boasts a “Free admission. Free entertainment. Free fun!” for families in the South Central Pennsylvania region. Free activities will be available to entertain kids of all ages throughout the day, including Library Storytime Corner, Atomic Bounce Houses, a baby animal petting zoo and pony rides, workshops with the City Islanders, a glass-blowing demonstration by Corning Museum of Glass and much more!
Admission is free, but guests are invited to bring a donation for the Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation, a Harrisburg-headquartered nonprofit organization that provides care packages to children battling cancer. The organization sends out 12,000 toys per quarter to more than 4,000 kids throughout the Keystone State and even the country.
Most of the organization’s inventory is received as end-of-year donations and from events such as the Hershey Bears’ Teddy Bear Toss in December. By summer, shelves are becoming bare. The goal of the Family Festival toy drive is to fill the organization’s stockroom and enable them to continue sending out gifts through the rest of this year.
Requested donation items include books and arts & crafts supplies for all ages, as well as gift cards for sites such as iTunes and Google Play, which can be sent to older children. Recently, the organization has seen an increased need for toys that appeal to boys.
“It is very important that all donation items are new,” says the charity’s Executive Director, Jocelyn Davis, because the recipients’ immune systems are very fragile and susceptible to additional infections.
Children can also learn by example from the Central Penn Parent Caped Crusader, who will be recognized in an awards presentation during the day. This monthly award recognizes a local student for giving back to the community. Marysville resident and Susquenita High School junior Chelsea Gray will be recognized for volunteerism with Wesley United Methodist Church’s “Do Something” committee and service to the homeless population in Harrisburg.
Other features on the stage will include Zumba® class, a demonstration by Tiger Rock Martial Arts, a preview of Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre’s summer show, “Mary Poppins,” and an interactive children’s show by Magical Nick, a Mechanicsburg entertainer who performed at the 2015 White House Easter Egg Roll, receiving accolades from First Lady Michelle Obama.
The 2016 Family Festival Harrisburg is produced by Central Penn Parent magazine and presented by Weis Markets and Penn State Children’s Hospital. Additional sponsors include: Allied Milk Producers’ Cooperative, Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation, Dauphin County Library System, New Story, WITF and abc27.
Exhibit spaces are still available for companies and nonprofits interested in connecting with consumers. Contact Lindsay Sica at 717-236-4300 or email@example.com for more information.
