Capital Area School for the Arts Charter School (CASA) to Move into New Academic Classrooms for Upcoming Fall 2020

Capital Area School for the Arts (CASA) Charter School, one of the top five Charter High Schools in the Commonwealth, is excited to announce they will be working with Harristown to lease and build out the third floor of Strawberry Square in downtown Harrisburg— adding classrooms, a science lab, and several other spaces to be used for academic instruction. The third floor space above the Food Court was previously occupied by Gamut Theatre.

“The move is exciting for us,” said CEO / Principal, Tim Wendling. “The improvements will allow CASA to support additional STEAM learning opportunities as well as sustain our academic needs well into the future.”

CASA is an arts intensive high school educating 200 students from nine counties and 30 school districts in downtown Harrisburg. Since its inception, CASA Charter School’s faculty, staff and Board of Trustees have prioritized the creation and maintenance of a rigorous arts and academic curriculum. Throughout the years, CASA’s state-measured performance scores have ranked among the best in Central Pennsylvania and placed it within the top five charter schools in the Commonwealth.

The CASA Charter School Foundation is raising $1.6 million to support the lease and renovation of the additional space. For the past several years, CASA has been leasing classrooms from the Temple University Harrisburg campus within Strawberry Square.

The project is set to be completed by August 2020, prior to the upcoming start of the 2020-2021 school year.

Granted a public charter in 2013, CASA Charter School has built on its foundation as the area’s only intensive high school arts education program. CASA offers a full-day high school experience for 200 students from 30 Central Pennsylvania school districts engaged in rigorous academic studies and arts education in one of six disciplines: dance, visual arts, film and video, theatre, creative writing and music, located in downtown Harrisburg at the Strawberry Square complex. The tremendous artistic talent of CASA students has been recognized and featured in local galleries, and on regional stages, screens and publications. CASA graduates have been accepted to prestigious arts and academic programs at colleges and universities throughout the United States and abroad.

Located in the heart of downtown Harrisburg, the school is an integral part of the economic, cultural, and artistic renaissance that has swept through the city in recent years. The students enrolled in CASA have an extraordinary opportunity to use the city as their classroom while participating in a truly original and collaborative environment where they are encouraged to create, learn, and excel.
