Harrisburg, PA – March 23, 2015- The Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg is pleased to announce the selection of Kevin Stanfield as the 2015 Youth of the Year.  Each year, a dynamic young rising star is chosen to be honored for their outstanding leadership, perseverance and their ability to truly embody all that the Boys & Girls Club stands for.

No stranger to adversity, Kevin has bounced back and forth through the foster care system.  Previously a Milton Hershey student from kindergarten through 8th grade, due to family circumstances, Kevin moved into the city five years ago and started attending the Boys & Girls Club.  “The Boys & Girls Club gave me a sense of community and helped me with maturity.  They’ve helped me to further myself and stay focused,” states Kevin who participated with several Boys & Girls Club programs including “Power Hour”, “Inspiring Teens” and  “Passport to Manhood”. He currently is working at the club to support himself financially.

For over 70 years, the Boys & Girls Club has been in the forefront of youth development, working with young people from various economic, social and family circumstances.  “In the 2013 fiscal year, we served over 1300 members ages 6-18 and that number is growing weekly,” states Yvonne Hollins, the club’s Executive Director.  The Club is part of a nationwide affiliation of local, autonomous organizations that work to help young people of all backgrounds to develop the qualities they need to become responsible citizens of leaders.

The Boys & Girls Club offers a drug-free, alcohol-free atmosphere with caring professionals. They provide not only a safe and positive place to be, but also offer programs geared to today’s challenges.  Though the young people at the club face many difficulties, the programs offered and the incredible support provided enables club members to excel. “Every day I have to walk two miles to get to school” states Kevin, “Through rain, snow, 20 below zero windy weather or whatever else Mother Nature is offering.  I could whine and complain that the distance is too far, but that would be entirely inappropriate.  So I wake up and I get moving, knowing my goal is graduating high school and going to college to then eventually a career of my choosing.”

Thanks to the Boys & Girls Club, it’s volunteers, employees and financial supporters; Kevin received a $10,000 scholarship for his first year of college and is on his way to attend IUP in fall of 2015.  Kevin is just one of thousands that the Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg helps every year.  During the 2012-2013 fiscal year, the Boys & Girls Club served 3,264 visitors.

The Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg is calling on the community to assist with financially supporting their efforts and to continue making a difference.  On April 30th, the Boys & Girls Club will host it’s 2nd Annual Legacy of Success: An Evening Full of Stars, from 5:30pm-8:00pm at 1227 Berryhill Street in Harrisburg to celebrate the accomplishments over the past year as well as to gather together past alumni and most of all, to celebrate young rising stars! The event’s presenting sponsor is RSR Realtors and features a red carpet theme with keynote speaker, Brian Hudson, CEO of the Pennsylvania Housing and Finance Agency and emcee for that night, RJ Harris, talk radio host with WPH580.   For more information and to register for the April 30th fundraiser, visit or call 717-234-3268.
