Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region Expands Beyond School Walls Youth Mentorship Program

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region (BBBSCR) has expanded its Beyond School Walls program to help even more high school students in the region. Deloitte and Mid Penn Bank are now collaborating with BBBSCR to provide professional mentoring to participating students.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America established Beyond School Walls in 2008 to address workforce development needs and job readiness skills. The curriculum-based program works with local businesses to introduce students to workplace cultures, team collaboration, and the soft skills needed to build a foundation for success.

Volunteer mentors from Deloitte will be matched one-on-one with ten students from Cumberland Valley High School. Volunteer mentors from Mid Penn Bank will be matched with nine students from Susquehanna Township High School. The students will explore career opportunities, develop important workplace skills and learn how to build professional relationships. Due to COVID-19, the program will be conducted through bi-monthly video conferences.

Beyond School Walls was launched locally during the 2016-17 school year through a partnership with Capital BlueCross.

“The students in the Capital BlueCross partnership have flourished,” says BBBSCR Interim CEO Amy Rote. “You can see their faces light up when they’re with their mentors. Compared to their first year in the program, the students are more outspoken and confident.”

Deloitte is strengthening its relationship with BBBSCR as part of their RightStep Corporate Citizenship Program. RightStep is a student-focused initiative, which offers a variety of services through 5 pillars: Mentorship, Junior Achievement, STEM/Tech, SAT Prep, and fostering relationships with educational institutions through the Commonwealth’s Intermediate Units.

The depth and breadth of Deloitte’s professional services, and the organizations they serve, will enable the students to experience a workplace that prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion; community involvement; and making an impact that matters. BBBSCR customized the Beyond School Walls program to take full advantage of this unique opportunity for the students.

“Deloitte was an ideal fit because their mentors will introduce the students to inclusive cultural diversity in the workplace,” says Rote. “Our program curriculum will address communication, cultural sensitivity and collaboration in a global organization with a strong, local commitment. The students will also experience first-hand the challenges that develop in a culturally diverse environment and adapt to different communication styles and problem-solving solutions.

“As an organization deeply committed to our local communities, we understand the importance of nurturing and mentoring children and young adults,” says Michele Keller, Managing Director, Deloitte Consulting LLP. “We are proud to come together with BBBSCR to help create an experience that is impactful for both the students and our professionals, and one that will contribute to long-term progress in the Harrisburg region.”

Mid Penn Bank has a long history of community involvement and is a long-time supporter of BBBSCR. It prioritizes developing impactful philanthropic initiatives that include opportunities for employee engagement.

Many of the Susquehanna Township High School students participating in this Beyond School Walls program partnership are exploring finance, banking, and accounting careers through the school’s Pathways career development program. Mid Penn Bank will encourage the students to explore the full spectrum of career experiences in the finance and banking world.

“Institutions like Mid Penn Bank offer challenging career opportunities with enormous growth potential,” says Justin Webb, Mid Penn Bank Senior Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer and BBBSCR Board Member. “Our team is excited to partner with BBBSCR to introduce a new generation of talent to the virtually limitless possibilities of a career in community banking.”

Students who participate in Beyond School Walls receive mentorship throughout their high school career. The multi-year program engages students until they graduate, helping them develop a plan for life after high school.
