Harrisburg, PA, February 19, 2015 . . . Alexander Building Construction Co., part of The Butz Family of Companies, recently completed construction of an addition to the Ingot Facility at the ArcelorMittal Steelton Plant. The longstanding partnership between ArcelorMittal and Lehigh Heavy Forge and the high strength, high tolerance products they produce, resulted in the need to expand the existing facility in Steelton.
“We are excited to now enjoy the results of nearly six years of planning, preparation and construction,” said Steve Taylor, General Manager, ArcelorMittal Steelton Plant. “Alexander’s project team excelled in managing all phases of the project, from design to final completion. They coordinated with our steelmaking operation throughout the project, resulting in a safe, high-quality project that meets our future production needs.”
The 18,000 sf, 100-foot high addition is comprised of a structural steel frame and supported by 212 concrete-filled steel pipe micro-piles. It is designed to accommodate a one million-pound overhead crane load.
Additional features of the project include:
- Demolition of an adjacent building and other structures on the site
- Earthwork in preparation of the new addition
- Installation of approximately 250 lineal feet of temporary sheet pile retaining wall
- Relocation and installation of new and temporary rail track
- Relocation of existing overhead and underground utilities
- Construction of a new employee changing/welfare building
- Furnishing of a repair crane
Given that the existing rail lines into and around the existing facility remained in operation, Alexander had to construct the project in phases to ensure that there was minimal interruption to the facility’s ingot production.
“We are proud to be a key part of this important project for ArcelorMittal Steelton,” said Rick Seitz, President of Alexander Building Construction Co. “The project was challenging, but our project team worked closely with the AMS team to overcome all challenges and deliver a high-quality and safe project that will benefit ArcelorMittal for decades to come.”
The project was completed in twelve months.
