Local Members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives Addresses The Membership of the Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC at the Annual Legislators’ Forum I Event
HARRISBURG (January 19, 2012) - Local members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives addressed the membership of the Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC at the annual Legislators' Forum I event held at the Hilton Harrisburg on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012. This event allowed chamber members an opportunity to interact with their area lawmakers, hearing about the hot-ticket items facing the General Assembly in 2012 as well as the Representatives' own personal legislative priorities.
The top two legislative issues were clear: passing a balanced, on-time state budget and developing long-term solutions for the Commonwealth's deteriorating infrastructure.
Representative Steve Bloom predicted budget cuts would be even deeper in 2012. "We made some tough cuts last year, and this year will be worse." As part of the budget process, Representative John Payne advocated for the streamlining of state government and the removal of any waste. Governor Tom Corbett will deliver his annual budget address on February 7th.
Though it remains a top priority for many of our local legislators, funding for Pennsylvania's deteriorating transportation systems and infrastructure may fall victim to this year's cuts. Mark Keller stated the importance of developing long-term solutions instead of short-lived fixes. Not only are Pennsylvanians faced with the physical risk that accompanies structurally deficient bridges and faulty water and sewer systems, but it also affects our state's economic growth. "If we don't have the infrastructure," Keller said, "we won't have the business." Representative Grell is hopeful Governor Corbett will soon reveal a plan to address these issues in conjunction with the 2012 budget address.
Other legislative issues included: advocating for prevailing wage, unemployment compensation, and property tax reforms; creating and sustaining Pennsylvania jobs; promoting a more open redistricting process; and amending parts of Act 47.
Representatives Stephen Bloom, Ron Buxton, Sheryl Delozier, Glen Grell, Sue Helm, Mark Keller, John Payne, and Scott Perry participated in a facilitated panel discussion moderated by HRC & CREDC President & CEO, David Black. The questions asked were solicited from Chamber membership prior to the event.
Legislators' Forum II, a similar event that features members of the Pennsylvania Senate, will be held on Wednesday, February 22nd from 7:30am - 9:30am at the Hilton Harrisburg.
