The Harrisburg Regional Chamber and CREDC Assists Farm in Lykens
HARRISBURG, PA (January 17, 2007) - The Harrisburg Regional Chamber and CREDC (HRC/CREDC) announced today that it provided financing to Marlin E. Wiest, Jr. to purchase 67.25 acres in Lykens, Dauphin County, PA for the purpose of continuing Mr. Wiest's cattle and crop farming enterprise. The land was sold by a retiring farmer and thereby preserves the land's agricultural use.Marlin E. Wiest, Jr. has been farming since childhood with his father. He began his own farming operation harvesting corn, wheat, soybeans, barley and oats. Marlin expanded his farm to include beef cattle several years ago to better utilize some crops in his rotation. With the purchase of this additional 67.25 acres, which includes additional storage space, Marlin has the potential to further improve the profitability of his crops.
"Our farms are a vital part of our economic development strategy," said Commissioner Nick DiFrancesco. "We are always happy to be able to preserve farmland for future generations, along with the family-sustaining jobs and life-sustaining food generated by our farming families. The Wiest Farm is an investment in the future of us all."
HRC/CREDC provided a Small Business First (SBF) loan of $163,540 through the First Industries program, in conjunction with Gratz National Bank financing and other equity contributions. The First Industries Fund is devoted to Pennsylvania 's Agriculture and Tourism industries. This program provides grants, loans, and loan guarantees for projects relating to the promotion and development of agriculture and tourism within the Commonwealth. The program is administered by the Commonwealth Financing Authority and by the Department of Community and Economic Development.
